The Orrido di Cunardo gorge in Varese province is one of the area's most interesting nature sites. Sited in the Upper Varesotto in the Cunardo area this natural phenomenon is Lombardy’s only huge hydrogeological cavity because this type of cavity, formed and carved out by significant water courses, is fairly frequent in the Trieste Karst area and occasionally present in Italy’s central-southern regions but exceptional elsewhere.
