From the Fort to the Lake

From Varese city centre the route climbs up to Sacro Monte passing Masnago castle and the stadium on the way. A section through the province’s main UNESCO site takes us back to the Mount Campo dei Fiori ascent. After a break at the province’s main panoramic belvedere overlooking the city and the lakes it continues on the gravel road to Orino fort. The 360 degree views from this point range across the whole province, taking in the main lakes, the Monte Rosa massif, Monviso, the Apennines and also Milan’s first skyscrapers. A steep descent then takes us to Mount Morto and little Motta d’Oro lake before continuing to Lake Varese at Gavirate. We then return to Varese along the cycle track which ends with Via Francisca in Casbeno quarter.
